Phoenix Church badly damaged after heavy storms

“Just shocking, surreal, something out of a horror movie,” said Pastor Bob Kerrey of the serious damage done to Moon Valley Bible Church.

PHOENIX – Cleanup continues for Moon Valley Bible Church on N. 7th Street in Phoenix after severe storms collapsed part of the roof on Friday night.

The damage to the church storeroom is great.

The collapse left a gaping hole and a mess.

“We’re still counting the casualties,” said Pastor Bob Kerrey.

Furniture, appliances and even children’s clothing were completely destroyed.

“We don’t know exactly what happened, but we suspect the water came down so hard and quickly that the scuppers couldn’t get rid of the water fast enough, and the weight of it just caused the collapse, then the collapse broke the pipes” said Kerrey.

At first he said he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

“Just shocking, surreal, something out of a horror movie.”

But he said anything that was lost can be replaced.

“The initial shock turned into more gratitude that no one was hurt.”

The rest of the church is still standing, but is drying up.

“We have over 28,000 square feet here, as far as we can tell, every inch of that had about four inches of water.”

The church will hold services online until everything is cleaned up and repaired.

“We don’t care about the building, it doesn’t define us, we bring life to our community and we will continue to do so,” he said. “Fortunately, we did and will continue to provide online services during the pandemic.”
