Phoenix Falls in Doubleheader Sweep at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. – The Elon University softball team had a pair of setbacks in its Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader at Delaware on Saturday, April 2. The Phoenix took a 6-5 defeat in game one before closing out the twin bill with a 9-3 result versus the Blue Hens in the nightcap at the Delaware Softball Stadium.

Elon moves to 17-16 overall and falls to 1-4 in the CAA. The Blue Hens improve to 19-11 with a 3-2 ledger versus league opponents.

Game One: Delaware 6, Elon 5

Delaware opened the scoring in game one thanks to a few Phoenix miscues in the bottom of the first. Halle Kisamore reached on a two-out single and scored off an Elon error to put the Blue Hens ahead 1-0.

The Blue Hens doubled their lead in its home half of the second. Delaware led off the inning on a solo home run to take a 2-0 lead.

Elon came back with a three-run top of the fourth to take the lead. Gabi Schaal doubled to open the frame and scored on a one-out single to left by Raelyn McGarry to put the Phoenix on the scoreboard. Elon took the lead on a Keagan Goldwait two-out double down the left field line that made the score 3-2 in favor of the Phoenix.

Delaware responded with a three-run bottom of the fourth to retake the lead. The Blue Hens connected on RBIs off a double and a triple to go back in front 5-3.

The Phoenix came back to tie the game once again in the top of the sixth. Goldwait reached on a single to left to open the inning before being replaced by a pinch runner. Drew Menscer joined her on the bases on her single through the right side before the two base runners moved into scoring position on Menscer’s stolen base. Rebecca Murray took advantage to drive both in on a two-RBI double to left center to knot the game at 55. Murray advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt on the next play, but was stranded as the next two batters popped up to end the threat.

The Blue Hens earned the win on a walk-off in the bottom of the seventh. Delaware had runners reach with a pair of singles with one out before Elon induced the second out of the frame on a ground out. With runners on second and third, the Blue Hens plated the game-winning run on a Phoenix wild pitch to earn the 6-5 victory.

Elon recorded 11 hits in the game, its second straight game in double-digit hits. Bella Devesa went 3-for-4 to lead the Phoenix at the plate with a double. Goldwait was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double while Murray also added two RBI. The Phoenix left nine base runners stranded compared to two for the Blue Hens.

Isley Duggins received the loss in the circle to fall to 4-3 on the year. The rookie went 3.1 innings in relief with one run allowed off two hits. McKenzie Weber started the game and went 3.1 innings with five hits and five runs allowed with four runs allowed.

Game Two: Delaware 9, Elon 3

At the start of game two, Elon struck first to get on the scoreboard. Murray led off the game on a single up the middle and stole second to move into scoring position before scoring on an RBI single by Carley Davis to put Elon ahead 1-0 after the top of the first.

Delaware tied the game at one-all in the bottom of the opening frame. Kisamore knotted the game at one-all on her one-out RBI double to right center, scoring Hanna Garber who reached earlier on a walk.

The Blue Hens put up a four spot in the bottom of the second. Delaware took the lead in the frame on a walk and hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded as well as a wild pitch and an RBI single from Kisamore to go up 5-1.

Elon got two back in the top of the third to trim its deficit to two runs. Murray again opened with a single up the middle and moved to second on a single from Megan Grant. An error on the catcher allowed Murray to score while moving Grant to third. Grant herself would cross the dish on Gabi Schaal’s sacrifice fly to make it a two-run game, 5-3.

Delaware came back with a three-run bottom of the fourth that put the game out of reach. A pair of RBI singles and another wild pitch aided the Blue Hens in expanding their lead to 8-3 through four complete.

An insurance run for the Blue Hens was added in the bottom of the sixth, setting the final score 9-3 for the twin bill sweep.

Murray was the Phoenix’s leader at the plate, going 3-for-4 for her 10th multi-hit game of the season and the third three-hit contest this year. Overall, Elon had six hits in the contest.
