HARRISONBURG, Virginia– Elon University Women’s Basketball lost their second CAA match in a close competition with James Madison on Sunday January 9th, 57-59.

THE RUNDOWN

Both teams succeeded in getting into the basket early, which resulted in five leadership changes in the opening phase. JMU put a couple of shots together late and went into second place by four points (13-17).

The Dukes kept momentum in the second quarter and expanded their lead to up to seven. With just a few seconds at halftime and James Madison 33:26, Brie Perpignan beat her defender from dribbling, stopped and fired a two-point jumper who rattled in when the buzzer sounded to make the score 28-33 half.

Maroon and Gold opened the gate in the second half with a three from Kayla Liles to put the Phoenix on two points on the Dukes (31-33). After the teams swapped points, a field goal from Perpignan sparked a 6-0 run that gave the Phoenix a 39-36 lead with 1:45 times remaining -40 in the final 10 minutes of the game.

The back-and-forth scoring continued into the fourth quarter, with the Dukes maintaining a slight lead for most of the period. With 55 seconds on the clock, Ariana scored Nance in a driving layout, followed by three of Liles who took Elon to one point (56-57), ten seconds behind. After two free throws from James Madison’s Kiki Jefferson, Perpignan fouled a three-point shot in the final seconds to give the Phoenix an opportunity to tie the game from the free throw line. The Guardian went 1 of 3 behind the charity strip, which resulted in victory for the Dukes.

REMARKS

-Evonna McGill went on the chestnut and gold offensive with a career high of 19 points, followed by Perpignan at 16. Perpignan also had four rebounds and a game high with four steals, in addition to Ariana Nance for the high assists team (3) .
-Liles scored seven points and led the team on three points (2).
-Nance had five top team highs rebounds while also earning six points.
-The Phoenix forced 22 JMU turnovers over the course of the game. Elon has now forced 20 or more turnovers in five games this season.
