Phoenix mother remembers her son who drowned at Tempe Town Lake | Arizona News

TEMPE, AZ (3TV / CBS 5) – A Phoenix teenager drowned early Tuesday morning at Tempe Town Lake, leaving his family and friends heartbroken. The police describe the death of Jacobi Walker as a tragic accident.

“He brought so much joy to my life and that was my firstborn,” said LaShawnda Lynch-Walker, Jacobi’s mother. “If you wanted to laugh, he would lay you on the floor laughing. That was his spirit, always laughing, joking and having a good time, and I’ll miss that so much.”

She wants people to remember the 18 year old as silly, cute, and smart. LaShawnda planned to send her son to college this fall, but plans his funeral instead.

A man’s body was recovered from Tempe Town Lake early Tuesday morning.

“I tell everyone out there, live your life to the fullest, because tomorrow is not promised to anyone,” said LaShawnda.

LaShawnda recalls her son mentioning he went on a double date after work Monday night. Tempe officials said Jacobi went to Tempe Town Lake with friends. Detectives said he jumped in the water but never reappeared, and first responders pulled his body out of the lake early Tuesday morning.

“He was taught to swim and I understand he made it all the way over, but I don’t think he could hold onto something to pull himself out,” said LaShawnda.

Tempe Police found no evidence of foul play and do not believe that drugs or alcohol were involved. “I just hope that other children learn from this and understand that swimming and being in the water are very serious,” said LaShawnda.

As painful as it is telling Jacobi’s story, Lashawnda hopes that she can keep other parents from suffering the same heartbreak. “I know he thought he could do it and he didn’t want to leave us behind,” said LaShawnda.

The family asks for prayer as they mourn their loss. They also set up a GoFundMe page.
