Phoenix police video shows officers go head-to-head with shooting suspect

PHOENIX — Police on Tuesday released video of a daytime shootout last month between officers and a suspect in a Phoenix neighborhood.

Body cam footage shows officers and tactical teams exchanging gunfire with 25-year-old Jose Samaniego Chacon Jr., a robbery suspect who barricaded himself in a home near 32nd Street and Union Hills Drive at around 4 pm on May 24.

Chacon first fired several shots at officers who were hiding behind civilian vehicles in an attempt to close in on the house.

Police then used cover fire to let those officers reposition in safer spots near the barricaded residence.

The standoff, which shut down the surrounding areas and forced evacuations of nearby homes, continued for about three hours until a special assignment team closed in with an armored vehicle.

The team used less lethal tactics and negotiations to eventually get Chacon to surrender.

Chacon was hospitalized with minor injuries and eventually was booked into jail on 17 counts of aggravated assault against police, burglary, attempted armed robbery plus other offenses.

One officer was hurt by shrapnel but did not need hospitalization.
