Phoenix Prepares to Host Hofstra and Northeastern This Weekend

ELON, NC– Elon University women’s basketball returns to Schar Center for a 7 pm matchup against Hofstra on Feb. 18 and a 1 pm contest against Northeastern on Sunday, Feb. 20.

THE MATCHUP

-Elon in on a four-game win streak against the Pride, owning a 13-3 all-time record.
-The Phoenix leads the overall series against the Huskies, 7-6.

SCOUTING THE PHOENIX

-The Phoenix (12-9, 4-7 CAA) completed its season sweep against College of Charleston in overtime on Feb. 13, 71-66.
-Brie Perpignan totaled a game-high 29 points on the day, with 13 of them coming from behind the charity stripe for a new career high. The senior also tallied six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
-Tyja Traore recorded her first double-double of her career with 10 points and a team-best 11 rebounds. Her boards are also a new personal best.
-Evonna McGill rounded out the Phoenix’s double-digit scoring with 10 points, shooting 3-of-7 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from behind the free throw line.
-Vanessa Taylor registered a game-high and career-best 13 rebounds on the day. Her previous high was five, which she reached three times over the course of her career.
-The maroon and gold outrebounded the Cougars 60-43. The last time Elon outrebounded an opponent this season was against Charleston inside Schar Center on Jan. 14.
-The last time the Phoenix logged at least 60 boards was in the 2017-18 season against Winthrop (62).
-The maroon and gold is led by 11th-year head coach Charlotte Smith, the winningest coach in program history.

SCOUTING HOFSTRA

-Hofstra enters the weekend with a 5-14 (2-9 CAA) record.
-The Pride came up short against Delaware in its last game on Feb. 13, 58-71.
-Rosi Nicholson led the Pride in scoring with 16 points while also adding six rebounds and four steals. Jaylen Hines posted a team-high seven rebounds and 15 points for her fourth straight game in double figures.
-The Pride was tabbed fifth in the CAA preseason poll. JaKayla Brown was selected to the Preseason All-Colonial Athletic Association Second Team.
-Hofstra is led by Danielle Santos Atkinson.

SCOUTING NORTHEASTERN

-Northeastern (12-10, 6-6 CAA) is on a three-game losing streak, recording losses against Drexel (46-61), Delaware (63-66) and Hofstra (43-56).
-In its most recent contest against the Dragons on Feb. 13, Katie May tallied a team-high 15 points, while Kendall Currence followed with 10. Claudia Soriano also added eight points, four rebounds, seven assists, and four steals.
-The Huskies were picked to finish tenth in the CAA preseason poll. Current was named preseason All-CAA honorable mention.
-The Huskies will face William & Mary on Feb. 18 prior to facing the Phoenix.
-The head coach of Northeastern is Bridgette Mitchell.

SENIOR DAY

-Elon’s eight seniors, Perpignan, Peyton Carter, Kayla Liles, Duru Tasman, McGill, Ariana Nance, Kellyn Trowse and Traore, will be honored following Sunday’s game against the Huskies as part of the Phoenix’s Senior Day festivities.
