Gates’ hiring comes after Assistant Willie Green agreed to become the New Orleans Pelicans head coach on July 22nd.

Gates was most recently an assistant with the Minnesota Timberwolves under Ryan Saunders and Chris Finch for two years.

In 2007 and 2008, he was named NBA G League Coach of the Year with the Idaho Stampede.

While Gates was Monty Williams’ assistant in 2010, they both coached Willie Green and current Suns point guard Chris Paul while playing for the New Orleans Hornets.

Gates was hired after Ryan Saunders was fired from the Timberwolves mid-season in the 2020-2021 season and Williams and his staff will be a familiar face.
