Public pools open in metro Phoenix for summer 2021

Metro Phoenix residents can expect some return to normalcy this summer as cities from Buckeye to Surprise to Gilbert prepare to open their public pools, with most offering public swim sessions.

In 2020, Phoenix’s 29 pools never opened due to COVID-19. This year, a dozen will open after more than a year of being out of commission.

Though most Arizona cities do not require face coverings to be worn outdoors, Phoenix and Tempe still have mask mandates in effect until further notice. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends wearing masks and maintaining social distancing while around people who are not members of your household.

Here is when each city’s pools are opening for summer 2021 and their public swim hours.

Buckeye

Lap swim starts May 24, open swim begins May 29 and night swim starts May 31. The aquatics center has a beachfront area and 160-foot water slide, among other features.

Buckeye Aquatics Center

Open swim hours: Noon-5 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays, May 29-July 31; noon-6 p.m. Saturdays-Sundays Aug. 1-Sept. 5.

Night swim hours: 7-9 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, May 31-Aug. 5; 6-9 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays June 4-Aug. 7.

Chandler

Chandler’s six pools will offer open swim this summer, and starting dates vary.

Residents can make reservations; nonresidents can join open swim times on a first-come, first-served basis. Pools will have “enhanced safety measures and controlled social distancing,” according to the Chandler aquatics website.

Arrowhead Pool

Public swim begins at Gilbert’s four pools on May 29. Face coverings are recommended. Social distancing is required while queueing for water slides, diving boards and entry.

Foothills Aquatics Center is open year-round for lap swimming, water aerobics and private swim teams. There is no scheduled start date yet for public swimming at the Rose Lane Aquatics Center.

Open swim will kick off on Memorial Day in Goodyear.

According to the city’s website, “Open swim hours may change due to weather, staff availability or city events. Please feel free to call ahead to confirm open swim times before visiting the pool.”

The Litchfield Park Recreation Center pool is open May 29-Sept. 6 this summer.

“We continue to monitor and follow current CDC recommendations to encourage mask use and social distancing at our Rec Center Pool,” said Tricia Kramer, community and recreation services director.

Mesa’s nine pools open for public swimming at limited capacity beginning May 29.

Occupancy will be limited to 220 people per 1 hour and 50 minute time frame. Pre-registration is encouraged at https://www.mesaparks.com. Opening weekend hours are 1-5 p.m. May 29-30.

Face coverings are required inside lobbies, bathrooms and locker rooms, but not outdoors. Social distancing is encouraged.

Peoria

Two of Peoria’s three public pools will offer open swim between May 24 and Aug. 1. Centennial Pool will not have open swim.

Phoenix

Twelve city pools are open this summer in Phoenix.

According to the city’s website, “Pools will operate on the normal seasonal schedule and be open six days a week from May 29 (Memorial Day weekend) to August 1 (closed Fridays), and on Saturdays and Sundays only from August 7 to September 6 (Labor Day).”

Pools will be open:

May 29-31.
June 5-10, 12-17, 19-24, 26-July 1.
July 3-8, 10-15, 17-22, 24-29, 31-Aug. 1.
Aug. 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, 29.
Sept. 4-6.

Guests must make reservations for open swim times, and capacity has been reduced. Ninety-minute time blocks can be booked Mondays and Thursdays beginning May 27 at https://www.phoenix.gov/parks/pools. Children ages 17 and younger are eligible for free admission.

Face coverings are still mandatory — but shouldn’t be worn while swimming — in Phoenix.

The following pools are closed for summer 2021: Alkire, Cielito, Coronado, David C. Uribe (Cactus), Eastlake, Grant, Harmon, Hermoso, Holiday, Madison, Marivue, Mountain View, Pierce, Roadrunner, Roosevelt, Telephone Pioneers and Washington.
