PHOENIX – A red flag warning was in effect on the Phoenix Subway and most of the state on Wednesday as high winds created fire concerns and dust bubbles.
The warning for the Maricopa and Pinal counties applies from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to the National Weather Service in Phoenix.
Gusts up to 35 mph could be widespread, reaching 45 mph locally.
Relative humidity of less than 10% in the afternoon is likely to increase the risk of fire.
“We have serious fire weather in store today and it is important that people avoid any type of outdoor activity associated with fire today,” Tiffany Davila, spokeswoman for Arizona Forestry and Fire Management, told KTAR News 92.3 on Wednesday FM.
“We already have dry conditions all over the state, so throw in those high winds and relative humidity and we basically have a recipe for critical fire weather.”
These winds could cause dust to blow over the two Phoenix subway districts.
The high temperature in Phoenix was slated to hit 90 degrees on Wednesday before dropping into the 60s later that evening.
