In a battle between two of the top 20 NJCAA Division I teams, the # 14 Yavapai College Roughrider softball team defeated a double header over the Matadors from # 17 Arizona Western College 1-0 and 6-1 on Tuesday afternoon in Yuma. YC is now 21-5 overall and 16-2 in ACCAC. AWC drops to 23-10 in the year and 11-5 in the conference game.
The first game was all about pitching for both teams. Emily Dix threw the entire game shutout, allowing only 2 hits and 2 walks while scoring 5 hits.
Cheyenne Sandoval drove Kayla Rodgers home in the third inning of the only run of the game.
The roughrider pitching stayed strong in the nightcap as Kamryn Kamakaiwi tossed the entire game with 6 hits and beat 5 batters.
Cheyenne Sandoval and Miki Berg had two hits apiece. Sandoval had beaten a double and two runs. Mikaela Payne was 1 to 4 with 2 runs.
The Roughriders will resume conference play on Saturday April 17th at Scottsdale Community College. The double header starts at 12:00 p.m.
