See Electric Fire Truck in Tucson, Arizona

One of Rosenbauer’s electric fire trucks visited the Tucson Fire Department, Arizona earlier this month to demonstrate its performance and features.

The “Revolutionary Technology” (RT) vehicle is a plug-in vehicle (EREV) which, depending on the version, can be equipped with a 50 kWh or 100 kWh battery in order to carry out the basic operations in EV mode (in particular at standstill).

The main power source remains a six-cylinder diesel engine, which also acts as a generator. The vehicle has a power export function (up to 18 kW) for switching on the external equipment.

According to media reports, the normal fire truck cost around $ 700,000 while this futuristic plug-in version starts at over $ 1 million. Only time will tell whether the difference is worth it.

Who knows, maybe at some point battery prices and energy density will get to a point where an all-electric version at 500 kWh or 1 MWh will be a sensible choice.

Rosenbauer’s electric fire engine “Revolutionary Technology” (RT) specifications:

  • 50 kWh Battery (standard, 550 kg) or 100 kWh (Possibility)
  • Volvo Penta electric powertrain
  • All-wheel drive with two motors (one electric motor per axle with two gears each)

a six-cylinder diesel engine with an output of 200 kW (272 hp) and a power generator
  • DC fast charging with up to 150 kW (50-80% in one hour at 100 kWh)
  • Power export function of up to 18 kW
