Several people were shot dead in a series of attacks in Tucson, Arizona.
TUCSON, Arizona (AP) – A string of Sunday afternoon attacks in Arizona resulted in five shootings, including one fatality, and two or three missing children, Tucson police said. The suspect was critically injured in the attacks by an officer.
A 35-year-old man is accused of opening fire on an ambulance crew at around 3:45 p.m. Sunday, Tucson Police Chief Chris Magnus told news outlets. The ambulance driver, a 20-year-old man, was shot in the head and a paramedic in the passenger seat, a 21-year-old woman, was shot in the chest and arm. The man was in critical condition, the woman was stable.
Then the suspect is accused of driving to the site of a nearby house fire and shooting at firefighters and neighbors who tried to put out the flames, the boss said. A neighbor was shot in the head and died. A firefighter was shot in the arm and another bullet hit the head of another neighbor.
A “badly burned” body was found in the burning house and “two or three” children who lived there are missing, Magnus said. Officials worked to determine the whereabouts of the children.
A police officer who was responding to the crime scene met the suspect a few blocks away, the chief said. According to the police, the suspect rammed his SUV into the official’s vehicle and opened fire. The officer returned fire and shot the suspect and seriously injured him, the boss said. The officer was not injured.
“This is a very tragic, really terrible incident with a lot of unknowns,” said Magnus.
The investigation was ongoing. What triggered the attacks was unclear.
