Snow in northern Ariz .; Phoenix to get showers, wind
Some areas of northern Arizona were covered in rain and light snow early Thursday morning, according to the National Weather Service. The heaviest snow was expected on Thursday evening.
According to the weather service, a winter weather report was issued for the highlands of counties Yavapai, Coconino and Gila, including Prescott, Flagstaff and Williams, from 6:00 p.m. Thursday through Friday. Areas are expected to see 2 to 6 inches of snow.
Snow was reported on Interstate 40 from Ash Fork to Winona and on Interstate 17 to State Route 89A, according to the weather service. Traveling along I-17 and I-40 near Flagstaff and parts of East Yavapai, South Coconino, and North Gila counties was expected to be dangerous.
The chances of snow showers will remain until Saturday as the cold temperatures are forecast to remain.
Flagstaff Airport reported 0.9 inches of snowfall around 5 a.m., while the Meteorological Service said its Flagstaff Bellemont office had seen 1.4 inches.
From Thursday through the weekend, approximately 4 to 8 inches of snow is expected in Flagstaff, while 2 to 4 inches is expected in Prescott and 1 to 3 inches in Payson.
According to the weather service, the high temperatures in the Flagstaff region will be in the mid-30s to Saturday with lows in the teenage years. Sunny skies are expected to return on Sunday, bringing high temperatures into the upper 40s.
Temperatures in the Phoenix region were below average on Thursday
In the Phoenix region, isolated showers and gusty winds are expected for the next few days when the low pressure system moves through the area according to a weather service forecast for the area.
The greatest chances of rain are in elevated areas in southern Arizona. According to the forecast, cooler temperatures are expected, which are around 10 to 15 degrees below normal.
The maximum temperature on Thursday at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport was 69 degrees, which is 7 degrees below normal according to the weather service.
High temperatures are forecast in the low to mid 60s through Saturday with lows in the 40s. The sunny skies are expected to return on Sunday with high temperatures in the 70s.
