The Rundown

• Both teams combined for one hit in the first three and a half innings of the game which came from Morgan State in the second inning as Weber and MSU starter Anaya Hunte battled in a pitchers’ duel.
• Morgan State nearly plated the first run of the game in the top half of the fourth. The Bears drew a walk with one out then stole the second to move into scoring position. Another grounder advanced her to third before Asia Thomas sent a ball into shallow right field. The Phoenix was able to recover however as Chloe Hatzopoulos hustled to get the ball in to first to record the putout and keep a run off the board to end the inning.
• Elon finally broke his stalemate both in the hits and scoring category in the home half of the fourth. Wells recorded Elon’s first hit of the day on a one-out single to left center and then advanced to second on a throwing error. White followed with a two-out RBI double into left center, scoring Wells and giving the Phoenix a 1-0 lead.
• The Phoenix added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth. Drew Menscer drew a free pass to lead off the inning and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Megan Grant. Menscer would cross the dish on Schaal’s sacrifice fly to left field to double Elon’s lead, 2-0.
• In the top of the sixth, Weber was aided by some solid defensive play as the Phoenix got into a jam with one out. Back-to-back one-out singles from Mia and Aliya Ewell gave Morgan State the tying runs on base before the bases were loaded on another single with the Bears’ No. 5 hitters coming to the plate. Weber and the Phoenix were able to finagle out of the jam however converting on a double play to keep the shutout intact.
• Weber would allow a leadoff double in the top of the seventh, but retired the next three batters she faced to secure the win.
