Suspect fatally shot in combat

INDIAN WELLS, Arizona (AP) – A Navajo Nation police officer investigating a possible murder fatally shot and killed a suspect during a fight, a police department said Wednesday.

The shooting took place in the small Indian Wells community in northeast Arizona on Tuesday evening after the officer met the suspect and was struck on the head with a blunt object, the department said in a statement.

The suspect died after being rushed to a Flagstaff hospital.

It was not clear whether the officer was injured, but the department’s statement said the officer was being taken to a medical facility for “medical treatment.”

The incident has been investigated by the Navajo criminal investigation department and the FBI, the statement said.

No identities were released.

Indian Wells is 90 miles east of Flagstaff.
