The Joker sequel, starring Joaquin Phoenix, is expected to start filming next year
Production on Joker 2 is progressing as a report claims filming for the 2019 sequel to Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix, will begin in 2023.
Joaquin Phoenix’s Clown Prince of Crime could return to the big screen at some point in the near future, with a report claiming production is moving ahead on a sequel to 2019’s Joker.
Phoenix is reportedly set to reprise his role as criminal comedian Arthur Fleck/Joker in the upcoming sequel, alongside returning co-writer and director Todd Phillips. Warner Bros. has reportedly received the first draft of the film’s script, according to an industry insider via Heroic Hollywood, with the studio expected to start filming the sequel sometime in 2023. Further details on the plot and other new and returning characters are currently under wraps.
Rumors of a Joker sequel began back in May 2021 after a report suggested Phillips would be co-writing the script. Doubts about the existence of the sequel were raised in October of the same year when Phoenix gave an uncertain answer when asked about the likelihood of a Joker 2. “I don’t know,” said the actor. “When we were shooting, we started — you know, uh, that’s an interesting guy. There are some things we could and could do with this guy [explore] further. But are we really going to do this? I do not know.”
Alternatively, some fans have begun to speculate that Matt Reeves’ upcoming film, The Batman, may actually be the Joker sequel they’ve been waiting for. Both films not only take place outside of the DC Extended Cinematic Universe, but also depict a similarly broken Gotham City. As such, it seems likely that The Batman will be some sort of spiritual successor to Joker, with Reeves appearing to be taking a similar character-driven approach to the Caped Crusader as Phillips did with Batman’s nemesis.
Actor Willem Dafoe, who reprized his role as the Green Goblin in Spider-Man: No Way Home, recently pitched his idea for a Joker sequel in which Dafoe plays an impostor Joker opposite Phoenix’s. “So it would be possible that it’s not Jokers dueling, but someone who says they’re the Joker who isn’t the Joker,” Dafoe explained. “And that opens up the possibility of an interesting story, especially when you had Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker and then someone who either mimicked or mimicked what he was doing.”
Phoenix became the fifth actor to portray the Clown Prince of Crime on the big screen when Joker was released, joining previous incarnations of the character played by Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger and Jarod Leto. In fact, critics rated every live-action version of the character, with Phoenix’s Joker just underperforming Ledger in 2008’s The Dark Knight and Nicholson in 1989’s Batman.
Joker is now available on DVD, Blu-ray, 4K UHD and digital.
