The Mayor of Tucson issues a statement regarding Ducey’s COVID-19 damage control order

TUCSON (KVOA) – Tucson Mayor Regina Romero made a statement Thursday afternoon after Governor Doug Ducey announced he would lift all Arizona COVID-19 mitigation measures.

Under the new executive order, Ducey will phase out all mask mandates implemented by local governments, including mandates introduced by both the city of Tucson and Pima County in June.

Here is Romero’s statement:

“Governor Ducey’s actions are mature and unnecessarily endanger life in Arizona. The vast majority of Arizonans are not fully vaccinated and the risk of more contagious, deadly variants remains. It is unfortunate that Governor Ducey is giving in to right-wing political pressures and jumping on the cart of ruthless actions by other governors instead of following science and doing what is best for the Arizonans.

“Removing local masking requirements is not tied to boosting our economy, as the governor is suggesting. On the contrary, its actions could exacerbate community transmission, prolong the pandemic and delay a full and permanent reopening of our economy.

“Our prosecutor has informed me that we have clear local authority to further implement our mandate for city masks. As mayor, I have no intention of lifting our local mask wearing requirements. Last summer, I announced that we would continue to implement a local mask mandate before the governor releases our hands precisely because we know we have legal authority. Here in Tucson, we will continue to follow the science and advice of our public health experts. ”
