HOLBROOK, Ariz. – On October 21, the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office received two 911 calls from the same phone number and when the caller was answered he hung up.

Telecommunications workers called the phone number back and got an answer. Loud music was playing in the background and NCSO asked the caller to turn the music down. The caller told her that she needed help with the kidnapping. A man could be heard in the background telling the caller to shut up, then the connection was disconnected.

NCSO tried several times to contact the caller without success. The state 911 office provides a resource called Rapid Deploy, which is a system that enables real-time connectivity with devices and data anywhere. This is another resource that telecommunications providers can use to determine the location of the caller.

Telecommunications used the Rapid Deploy system to text the caller and ask if they could send a text message, to which they replied, “Yes, please help me.” NCSO continued communicating with the caller via SMS for information on their location and a description of the suspect. While communicating with the caller, NCSO forwarded the updated information to the Arizona DPS Troopers and the Navajo County Sheriff Deputies, who responded to the call.

With the help of the caller and the Rapid Deploy system, the suspect was eventually arrested at the Flying J gas station in Winslow, Arizona. The first 911 call was received at 4:31 pm and the suspect was arrested at 5:09 pm

The NCSO receives numerous service requests every day. You never leave a call unanswered. You work hard every day working to ensure that the citizens of Navajo County get the help they need.
