The Phoenix community is debating the future, according to Derek Chauvin

PHOENIX – 12 News sat down with Pastor Betty Mcgee, ward organizer Jacob Raiford, attorney Benjamin Taylor, and former Phoenix deputy chief Andy Anderson to discuss Derek Chauvin’s historic verdict.

Everyone agrees that changes are still needed, but they have different thoughts on how to move forward.

As part of the social justice groups WE Rising Project and NOCAP, Raiford believes that a new response group should be formed, separate from the police department, to respond to nonviolent calls in lieu of officers.

McGee wants law enforcement, city and state leaders to recognize the prejudice of people of color when they meet with officials.

Taylor says more officers will need to wear body cameras to help officers and civilians feel safer.

Anderson says the community needs to stop generalizing officers and learn to trust them.
