The state-sponsored COVID-19 vaccination center is slated to begin in Yuma

YUMA, AZ – Arizona health officials have announced a partnership to open a state-sponsored COVID-19 vaccination center at the Yuma Civic Center in Yuma on March 29.

The Arizona Department of Health and Governor Ducey announced that the vaccination center will be held in partnership with Yuma County, the City of Yuma and the Yuma Regional Medical Center.

Officials say the website has been delivering Moderna vaccine but will be offering Pfizer vaccine for first doses starting March 29. Local officials say they will make sure people who were given Moderna as the first dose also get it as the second.

“Arizona’s vaccination centers have been instrumental in the state’s work to protect communities and vulnerable populations,” Governor Ducey said in a statement. “We want to ensure that rural areas have easy access to vaccinations, and operations at the Yuma site will support that effort. I am grateful to ADHD, Yuma County, Yuma City, and the Yuma Regional Medical Center for their work in protecting Arizonans and expanding vaccine availability. “

The government-sponsored website launches on Monday, March 29, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week for people aged 55 and over and offers around 8,000 appointments per week. However, it is capable of delivering over 4,000 doses per day.

“We are very excited to be working with Yuma County officials to expand our hugely successful state vaccination centers beyond the Phoenix and Tucson areas,” said ADHD Director Dr. Cara Christ in a statement. “This builds on Yuma County’s strong efforts to vaccinate its population and positions southwest Arizona to expand vaccination as our federal supply grows.”

Yuma Mayor Douglas J. Nicholls says the website is “critical to taking the Yuma community to the next level”.

Appointments can be made from Friday, March 26th, 11 a.m. at podvaccine.azdhs.gov or by calling 1-844-542-8201
