Three wild horses found shot dead in eastern Arizona
Three wild horses were found dead in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests in eastern Arizona. It is the latest in a year-long string of unresolved horse murders in the region that began in 2018.
Forest Service officials say all three horses recently found in the Black Mesa Ranger District near Heber were shot dead.
Officials are asking for help from the public, saying the forest service is trying to stop the mysterious murders that have plagued the state-protected wild horse herd. Dozens have been found shot dead on the Apache Sitgreaves in recent years.
There have been no arrests to date, but investigations are ongoing. The officials did not provide any further information.
Last January, three adult wild horses, including a pregnant mare, and a foal were killed in the Black Mesa Ranger District. And in January 2020, eight dead horses were found.
The horses roaming the National Forest and other lands near the town of Heber are protected by the Wild and Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act, enacted in 1971 by President Richard Nixon.
Those in possession of information are asked to call the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office Tipline at (928) 524-4050.
A $ 10,000 reward will be offered for clues leading to an arrest.
