Top 10 players Viktor Hovland and Xander Schauffele join the Phoenix Open field
The People’s Open field continues to strengthen as world top-10 Viktor Hovland (5) and Xander Schauffele (7) have signed on to play at the Taylor Morrison-presented 2022 World Championships Phoenix Open, which begins on Sept February 26, 2022. 7-13 at TPC Scottsdale. The field of participants now includes five players who are placed in the top 10 and 11 of the top 20 of the official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).
Hovland has three PGA TOUR wins under his belt since turning pro in 2019, including a win at the Worldwide Technology Championship in Mayakoba last November. The Norwegian has enjoyed a stellar 2020-21 season, earning a win (Mayakoba Golf Classic), two second places, two third places and a T5 in the season-ending TOUR Championship and finishing fifth overall in the final FedExCup occupied placements. This will be Hovland’s second appearance at the WM Phoenix Open.

Schauffele, the gold medalist at the 2021 Olympics, also had a spectacular 2020/21 season with three second places, four top-5s, eight top-10s and a matching T5 with Hovland at the TOUR championship to tie him for the fifth place in the final FedExCup standings. His outstanding season was capped with that gold medal in Tokyo and a win as a member of the winning US Ryder Cup team. He has finished in the top 20 in all four appearances at the WM Phoenix Open, including his runner-up finish in 2021.
The star-studded field now consists of 22 players ranked in the top-50 of the official golf world rankings, led by Jon Rahm, who ranks first overall, closely followed by fifth. A field of 132 players will compete for the $8.2 million prize pool, $1,476,000 first place check and 500 FedExCup points. Eligible players are assigned to one of 34 PGA TOUR priority ranking categories based on their past performance on the TOUR. The 2022 World Championships Phoenix Open will be held at TPC Scottsdale from February 7th to 13th.
