Tucson Doctor Responds to New Pfizer Data on Adolescent Vaccine Study
TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) – Pfizer announced on Wednesday that the clinical trial of COVID-19 vaccines in young people 12-15 years old is 100% effective against the coronavirus. The pediatrician Dr. Nathan Price of Banner University Medical Center says the new data is good news in fighting the spread of the virus.
“I think it’s super exciting, provided that everything works the way we hope it will. I think this will be very helpful in bringing this pandemic under control. We know our teenagers are part of this chain of transmission for infection and if we can vaccinate them safely and effectively it can go a long way, ”Price said.
KGUN 9 asked Dr. Price also according to the effectiveness against the variants occurring across the country.
“I haven’t seen anything in particular for these kids. So far the data seems pretty reliable out there, but we’ll have to wait and see how it turns out,” Price said.
In terms of availability, the drug company is expected to apply for an emergency clearance from the FDA in the coming weeks. Peer reviews and research on the data are also part of the process.
“It’s a really good step forward, and if the FDA approves this and says yes, it looks safe and effective, then I think it’s a good thing to do. I actually plan to vaccinate my own children as soon as I can, once those vaccines are approved, ”Price said.
According to Pfizer, 2,260 adolescent participants were able to safely tolerate the doses during the trial. The company’s current vaccine, used in the United States, is only approved for use by people 16 years of age and older.
“It seems safe and effective for the kids who rated you here. So far the data out there seems to be pretty reliable, although we have to see how it all turns out in the end, “Price said.
