Tucson goat snack on discarded Christmas trees

TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) – As the holiday season ends, lots of people get rid of their Christmas trees, and a local petting zoo helps visitors with the task.

“We’re an exotic educational petting zoo,” said Kenneth MacNeil, owner of Tucson Petting Zoo and Funny Foot Farm.

It’s been a busy season at the Tucson Petting Zoo and Funny Foot Farm on Block 2400 of W Wetmore in Tucson.

Owner Kenneth MacNeil serves his goats a special treat during the Christmas season. His goats feed on gourmet Christmas trees. In fact, the goats eat all of the Christmas trees donated to the zoo.

“We give the goats the Christmas trees because it’s actually good for parasites to eat the pine needles in the landfill,” MacNeil said.

The petting zoo has been feeding the goat trees for years. Typically the zoo takes in around ten Christmas trees each season. Donors can call the zoo to make arrangements for a donation.

“We put in Christmas trees every time people have extra ones they don’t know what to do with,” MacNeil said.

The outdoor business model helped the zoo survive during the pandemic. The zoo has been around for about 5 years and the enclosures are still full and filled with exotic animals.

“We were a little scared for a few months, but for the most part we could be open during most of the pandemic because we are outside. We got a good number of customers in, ”said MacNeil.

MacNeil will continue his tradition as long as the trees and visitors come and the goats keep eating.

“If you love animals, come by and meet some nice animals. Most of our animals are raised by babies, so they are very kind people who love attention, “said MacNeil.
