Tucson is preparing for 300-500 refugees from Afghanistan

TUCSON, Arizona (KGUN) – Tucson is likely to host between 300 and 500 refugees from Afghanistan, said Ward 6 Councilor Steve Kozachik.

Southwest Lutheran Social Services and the International Rescue Committee are now preparing for their arrival.

“So our role is always to help them get instant jobs, settle in at home, and go to school,” said Connie Phillips, president and CEO of Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest.

Recently, UPS and Amazon have joined more than 30 companies across the country that have announced plans to hire refugees from Afghanistan.

Phillips said they can host 100 refugees and are expected to arrive in the next two weeks. Southwest Lutheran Social Services said they have many volunteers to take in the refugees.

“We are also looking for volunteers to serve as mentors to our refugee youth, as tutors to help children with their schoolwork,” Phillips said.
