Tucson man delivers grocery boxes to thousands
TUCSON, Arizona (KOLD News 13) – This week we pay tribute to a man from Tucson who has single-handedly helped thousands of families in southern Arizona over the years. Martin Valenzuela makes a huge difference in the community.
“I do around 60 to 80 home deliveries myself, where I go to the residents who can’t get out,” said Martin Valenzuela, this week’s Heart & Sol recipient.
For more than five years, his efforts in the Santa Monica, St. Augustine, and St. Vincent Church have helped distribute food to families in need.
“I drive far, wherever we are, all the way south. Even about the mission, ”he said.
He loads his truck and brings the boxes straight to people’s homes.
“Right in front of your door. I have low income families with lots of children. They see me pull up and ask, do you have any snacks for me today? Do you have cupcakes? “Said Valencia.
During Thanksgiving, Christmas, and even New Years Eve he can be found handing out holiday meals until the last one is served. He is the driving force behind the supplies and often travels to remote areas to make sure no one goes hungry on his watch.
“It’s overwhelming to see people at times. Quite heartbreaking to see especially the kids, ”he said.
He always shows up and gives 100 percent. In February he survived extreme pain on one day of delivery and ended up in the emergency room to undergo emergency surgery on the gallbladder. He is known in the community for his efforts and has no plans to quit anytime soon.
“Help the community. Help the people out there. You need it, we all need it, ”he said.
Valenzuela received a $ 300 gift card from our sponsor Casino Del Sol. If you have someone you think represents “the heart and soul of Tucson,” please nominate them here.
