It’s a new year, but there was a known result for the Tucson Roadrunners who saw another win against first-placed Stockton Heat.

Tucson (11-9-2-0) beat the Heat 2-1 at home on Tuesday night.

“If we play our game, if we play the way we want, we can beat anyone,” said Roadrunners center Jan Jenik. “Of course they are a strong team, but never underestimate the Roadrunners.”

The Roadrunners will hold the Heat again on Wednesday evening at 6.30 p.m. in the Tucson Arena.

After the Roadrunners postponed a series with the Abbotsford Canucks and San Diego Gulls, this was their first game since a 4-3 away win over the Ontario Reign on December 18.

“I think it’s just tough, there is a lot of time between games,” said Roadrunners coach Jay Varady. “I think if you look back on the AHL history of the season you won’t find that break we’ve had so often, so I thought the guys did a good job.”

Stockton (19-4-2-1) have lost seven times in 26 games this year, and the Roadrunners are responsible for three of those losses.

At the beginning of Tuesday, the Heat were second in the league with 41 points and were at the top of the Pacific Division.
