Tucson Water encourages customers to conserve rainwater during the monsoon season
TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) – Pima County’s Master Gardener Demonstration Garden thrives after one of the wettest monsoons of all time. When the storms stop, your plants don’t have to suffer because gardeners have been storing rainwater all summer long.
“This plastic cistern has a capacity of about 1,300 gallons. That’s a pretty typical size that customers install, ”said Candice Rupprecht, Tucson’s Water Water Conservation Manager.
According to Rupprecht, over 2,600 Tucson Water customers have installed such a system in their garden.
“Active harvesting is when a customer installs a tank or cistern, catches the water from the roof and then can use that water for future irrigation needs. He doesn’t have to use it when it rains. He can save it for the future,” said Rupprecht.
The method is known as “rainwater harvesting”. The residents can use the stored water in various ways.
“Most of the time they water their trees and bushes with this water extraction. However, we have seen customers who use it to fill their swimming pools, fountains or bird baths, ”says Rupprecht.
There is also a simpler approach for residents. Rupprecht said that subtle changes to your landscape will help save water and better water plants.
“We do this by creating earthworks, berms, and basins. We are moving the land to ensure that the water can stay on the property, ”said Rupprecht.
Tucson Water customers have collected 70 million gallons of rainwater through harvesting. While they help the environment, they also save a lot of money.
“It really helps you save water in your landscape and also helps you save your bills. If you use rainwater instead of tap water, it is water that is free of charge for you, ”said Rupprecht.
Tucson Water customers who collect rainwater on their property and attend a free workshop can receive a discount of up to $ 2,000. To learn more, click here.
