A Phoenix police officer who was on life support after being shot eight times has been discharged from the hospital, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

“On January 24, 2022, Officer Tyler Moldovan was released from Saint Joseph’s Hospital. Officer Moldovan was taken to an undisclosed medical facility where he is being rehabilitated for injuries sustained while on duty,” Phoenix Sgt. Ann Justus said in a statement released Monday night.

Moldovan and other officials were called to a neighborhood near 19th Avenue south of Camelback Road for erratic driving and making donuts after 2 a.m. on December 14.

During the investigation, patrol officers found a car matching the description of one of the vehicles parked in an apartment complex. When officers searched the area, police said Moldovan found 24-year-old Essa Williams hiding behind a short wall of a covered apartment patio.

Moldovan gave Williams the order to leave the patio when the suspect pulled out a gun and began firing, hitting the officer multiple times, investigators said. The interaction reportedly lasted seconds.

Williams, 24, now faces multiple charges including attempted first-degree murder after detectives said he shot Moldovan multiple times.

Earlier this month, Tyler’s wife, Chelsea Moldovan, told 12 News that her husband is in stable condition but is still on a ventilator.

She said Tyler Moldovan recognized the people around him and responded with facial expressions like a smile.

“It was shocking for me. I was aware of the small advances, but it just shows me that the human spirit is very strong, as well as miracles,” said Justus.

It’s unclear what condition Tyler Moldovan is in or the extent of his injuries.

Justus said Tyler’s injuries were initially described as “non-survivable,” and while he’s made progress, he said his injuries are “life-changing.”

“The emotional roller coaster ride that we all experienced was unimaginable,” said Chelsea Moldovan. “Our family and I are overwhelmed by the incredible support we have received.”
