Unemployment is rising in Yuma County
Yuma’s unemployment rate has risen despite sufficient job availability – News 11’s Arlette Yousif reports
YUMA, Arizona (KYMA, KECY) – With employment signs hanging all over Yuma County, jobless claims rose from April to May this year, according to Arizona @ Work. Some local companies offer higher salary rates to attract qualified applicants.
Although unemployment is high, the numbers are still better than they were at that time last year.
“The last published report was for the month of May 2021 at 17%. Last year around this time we were around 21.5%. Of course, you can tell there’s a slight decrease from last year because of everything we’ve just been through, ”says Moises Pimentel, consultant for Arizona @ Work Business Services.
Despite the early expiry of extended unemployment benefits on July 10, companies are still struggling to fill jobs.
On Tuesday, in the early edition of News 11, Arlette Yousif shared details about upcoming job fairs and what local businesses are doing to compete for unemployment benefits.
