United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona offer free tax assistance to qualified households

TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) – Filing your tax return is not always easy, and this year’s process will be different for many.

“The biggest concern is that people haven’t received their stimulus payment. A number of people who have never applied before are submitting this year because that is the only way to get the stimulus,” said United Way of Southern Arizona Associate Ken Briggs, vice president of community development.

Briggs and others are helping people manage these changes through United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program or VITA. The program is free to anyone with an annual household income of $ 66,000 or less. This year United Way is partnering with the Pio Decimo Center.

“The idea for low income tax preparation is to help low and middle income people get the credits they can get, make sure their tax returns are correct, and help them get away from it all Keep out preparers who could create a fraudulent tax return, “Briggs said.

The service is mainly offered online this year. This change was brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, but it is unstoppable by volunteer students like Margaret Krenke.

“I really enjoy talking to customers and hearing about their lives and how they looked last year,” said Krenke.

All “VITA” volunteers are IRS certified.

For Krenke, “VITA” is an opportunity to try out a possible career. It is an essential ministry to those she helps that they may not otherwise have had.

“I like to know that I am doing a small part in getting them the money they need,” said Krenke.

Applications for the “VITA” program are possible until April 15, 2021. Click here to get started.
