Waiting for repairs, weeks after the Phoenix apartment flooded
PHOENIX – The apartment of a woman from the valley was flooded weeks ago, but repairs are still pending.
“We live outside of our bedroom. We have to eat and sleep in it all the time, ”said Melissa.
She says they were forced to live in a single room after their unit at the Banyantree Apartments was flooded in early July.
“It just didn’t stop coming out. So it just started going everywhere. And it started to smell really bad, ”said Melissa.
She says management sent mechanics but they couldn’t locate the problem or weren’t prepared to deal with it, leading to delay after delay.
Now, a month later, Melissa says she had to send her children to the family to worry about potential health concerns the longer they wait.
“I never wanted to go that far. But you know, they come home happy with their families at night while I sit here suffering, ”said Melissa.
After calling both the management company and the complex via email and no response, we showed up at the apartment office asking for answers.
However, they did not respond, saying that it was a management problem and that it was out of their hands.
“You know, this is supposed to be our home and it doesn’t feel like home at all,” said Melissa.
What should you do when you are in a similar situation?
Document your repair requests.
The City of Phoenix and Community Legal Services have templates that you can fill out and give to your landlord.
If no action is taken within a reasonable period of time – between 24 hours and 5 days depending on the problem – you can deduct costs for things like hotel accommodation from your rental or cancel your rental agreement.
Keep receipts in case you are challenged in court.
