Wear OS Play Store page gets a major redesign with a cleaner layout

Google has tacitly revised the Wear OS landing page in the Play Store. The redesigned layout highlights included watch faces and apps so that they are easily recognizable on the portable platform. The company uses colored headings to distinguish different sections within the page.

If you’ve visited the Wear OS Play Store page a lot lately, you may remember that it had four main sections: Top Free, Top Earning, Trending, and Top Paid. Now with the latest redesign, they’re all gone, which makes for a cleaner layout.

The new layout gives more meaning to popular apps in different categories. There are now three main sections: Recommended Apps, Getting Started Apps, and Recommended Watch Faces (Most Popular Styles). Additionally, Google added separate sections for must-have tools, Wear OS games, music and radio apps, designer watch faces, finance apps, weather apps, and fitness apps, with certain sections identified by colored headings.

The latest redesign extends to landing pages as well. There, too, Google used a clearer layout. All in all, it’s a major redesign of the Wear OS landing page in the Play Store, and it’s a badly needed one. While it doesn’t affect the usability significantly, the new layout looks cleaner and helps users discover popular apps quickly.

Google is redesigning the Wear OS Play Store page and may be preparing for Pixel Watch

After years of false hopes, Google is slated to finally launch a Pixel smartwatch this year. The new watch has seen a lot of leaks recently, suggesting an imminent launch. This cleanup of Google’s Wear OS Play Store landing page also suggests that they are preparing for something big.

The last change was made without any official announcement or similar. As the folks at 9to5Google found out after some digging on the wayback machine, the older layout was live until at least April 14th. So Google seems to have made the change in the past few days. This change is available in both the mobile app and the web versions of the Google Play Store.

Unfortunately the URL is still “ANDROID WEAR”. You may recall that Google used to refer to its portable platform by this name. However, the name was changed to Wear OS in March 2018. You would expect the company to change the URL for the Play Store landing page in the meantime, but it has not yet done so. Nevertheless, you can take a look at the new layout here.
