While border controversy broke out, a property sale was approved in a 3-2 vote by Calexico City Council, with councilors Raul Urena and Gloria Romo firmly opposed to the sale.

Urena City Councilor said the land sale would allow the Army Corps of Engineers to further militarize Calexico’s town. Urena believes the land facing the boundary fence on First Street would be used to build a second wall.

Fortunately, Johnson & Johnson vaccines are currently available in Imperial County. The community has been waiting for this single-dose vaccine to offer residents a third option.

While the single-dose shot intrigues many who would prefer to get it over with, some question its appropriateness.

Compared to the 95% effectiveness and higher rate of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines, the newly approved J&J vaccine is only 72% effective.

Mexicali set a standard for Baja California and was the first city to receive thousands of COVID-19 vaccines for seniors. More than 27,000 vaccines have been received and 7,000 people are expected to be vaccinated on Monday March 15.

Coronavirus cases in California close to 3.6 million, with Imperial County’s numbers not even one percent of the state’s total. Yuma County has a higher level of accountability in 4.3% of Arizona’s 832,743 compiled cases.

Arizona as a whole has nearly doubled the number of doses given since last week. Just over 2.6% of Arizona’s total doses are in Yuma County, while only 0.29% of California’s accumulations are in Imperial County.

After all, the greatest parents in all of the southwestern desert have been waiting to send their children back to school.

Yuma Union High School District schools are about 50-70% full as some families continue to prefer distance learning.

Arizona governor Doug Ducey recently announced that schools must return to the classroom by Monday March 15. District One’s decision was made before the governor’s orders.

The lunch break was eliminated to avoid large gatherings. Students can instead pick up their prepackaged lunch at the end of the school day, which has been set at 12:30 PM in some schools in the district and 12:45 PM in others.

Compared to the usual seven hours that students had to spend in school before the pandemic, the typical school day is only about five hours.
