Wendell Burnette remodeled in Phoenix, Arizona in 1952

Wendell Burnette Architects have completed the conversion of a “Haver Home” built in 1952 in the US state of Arizona. The houses of Ralph Haver, who was one of the most famous practicing architects in Phoenix during the post-war boom, are characterized by low roof lines, generous amounts of glass and integrated living spaces both indoors and outdoors. The client for this project is located in Phönix ‘architecturally significant Marlen Grove district. He is a law professor at Arizona State University with an interest in the significant architectural history of the community.

In order to properly remodel the house, which had been changed almost beyond recognition, the architects at Wendell Burnette searched the area for a “Haver Home” that seemed as close as possible to the original plans. “We knocked on the door and spent an afternoon meeting Bob and Helen Winkle, who bought their house from a graphic designer over 35 years ago, as design guys, mostly architects, owned most of the 53 houses they’ve now made up legendary Marlen existed, ”says the design team. “We conclusively determined that their ‘patio / carport’ model (the only one intact in the neighborhood) was indeed our original model, and we wanted to recreate the spirit of the original ‘showpiece’ model featured in sales brochures . “

The architects tried to restore the lavish spirit of these humble homes while respecting the size and context of the surrounding neighborhood. In the first phase of the project, the living space was opened up and a new relationship with the garden to the south was established without reducing the area of the modified property – an important principle of the original design. In the second phase, the kitchen and bedroom were intelligently reconfigured. The project completed on a tight budget and the architects took pride in being part of an act of important architectural preservation.
