Phoenix is considering paying a developer to build half a street in a key location in the southwestern part of the city.

The residents of the fast-growing Laveen have repeatedly told guides that they need more retail and convenience. Now the city’s subcommittee on economic development is going to recommend that the city council pay Kitchell Development to build half a street next to a 65-acre industrial park being developed on the southeast corner of the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway and Baseline Road.

Alderman Jim Waring said the deal will speed up public infrastructure: “It’s not like we’re subsidizing it to do anything specific. that taxpayers have to pay anyway. “

In 2019, the Sprouts Farmers Market opened as an anchor for the first phase of the Laveen Park Place project. Since then, other retailers have opened and as part of the second phase, Harkins Theaters plans to build a 12-screen complex.

“By introducing 59th Avenue at this point, we are opening a full page of development that will allow us to attract additional retailers that we want to bring in now rather than waiting for infrastructure in the future,” said Christine Mackay, Phoenix ‘ Economic Development Director.

If the council approves, Phoenix Kitchell will pay up to $ 2.5 million for a public construction on 59th Avenue off Baseline Road north of South Mountain Avenue. Funding would come from the city’s strategic economic development fund.
