Women-owned companies are holding a free food festival at Sherman Phoenix
MILWAUKEE – Sherman Phoenix hosted a free food festival. More than 20 women-owned restaurants were represented on Sunday.
From pizza. with pasta, wraps and everything in between – A free bite to eat wasn’t hard to come by on Sunday afternoons at the Sherman Phoenix.
“There’s pizza. There’s chicken quesadilla and I’ve got a couple of Buffalo Boss wings,” said Britney Lucas.
Lucas was one of hundreds who left the Free Food Festival happy.
The five-hour festival was put together for the community by more than twenty women-owned companies. It was funded by a $ 80,000 grant from the nonprofit World Central Kitchen.
“They had funding for International Women’s Months and wanted to support women-owned businesses. We did that today,” said Caitlin Cullen, owner of The Tandem in Milwaukee.
After a year of COVID-19, the pandemic is still ongoing. The days are still tough for some, but the Sunday event brings a little relief during these troubled times. “
“A lot of us are fighting it out here and it’s just good when people help you,” said Cynthia Baker.
Baker took her granddaughter outside to eat and enjoy the sunny weather. She was glad that her young granddaughter saw other strong women helping each other.
“It just means that there are strong women out here who survive together. We all stick together and survive together,” Baker said.
Sandwiches kept coming in at the Rise and Grind Café. as employees they did in the kitchen. young volunteers with the non-profit organization GLOW 414 for young women would give them to anyone who wanted or needed them.
“That’s why GLOW stands for Girls Learning to become outstanding women, because women, we rock!” said Mikell Daniels.
