Wreck in west Phoenix kills 1 man, 1 woman; 6 others injured
PHOENIX (AP) – A man and woman were killed and six other people injured, including two toddlers and a 3-year-old, in a multiple vehicle accident in West Phoenix early Monday.
The wreck occurred around 12:15 on Grand Avenue near 37th Avenue, Police Spokeswoman Sgt. Mercedes Fortune announced. She said a male driver who had two adult passengers in his vehicle was in the westbound lanes and unable to evade another vehicle that was involved in an uninjured collision. This vehicle was occupied by two women and three young children.
As a result of the impact, the vehicle with the women and children was thrown onto the road towards the east, where it was hit by an oncoming vehicle that was driven by a man with a male and a female co-driver.
Fortune said the two passengers in the vehicle traveling east were pronounced dead at the scene. There were a total of 11 people in the three vehicles.
Fireman David Ramirez, a spokesman for the Phoenix Fire Department, said three women were seriously injured and the 3-year-old child and 1 1/2 year old twins were in stable condition. Fortune said everyone is expected to survive.
The driver of the first vehicle showed symptoms of impairment and was tried and released at the scene of the crime. He could face additional charges, Fortune said.
