Yuma City Unveils New Public Art on Bike Path in West Wetlands Park

Presented by Beltone – A leader in hearing medicine.

The City of Yuma is pleased to announce the launch of a new public arts function in honor of Charles E. Cheatham, a local Special Olympics whose smiles and bike rides were known to many Yumans.

The art sculpture will be unveiled to the community on Tuesday, December 28 at 2 p.m. near the bike path on Colorado Street, east of 12th Avenue.

Local students from Az-Tec High School and YPIC Charter High School worked with Shanen Aranmor of Weld Like a Girl ™ to turn the bicycle Cheatham used for transportation into a work of art. Students designed the metal art function and had the opportunity to learn basic welding skills after completing the project.

Cheatham, 49, graduated from Kofa High School, competed in the Special Olympics and “played every single sport they had,” according to his sister Dejon Delpino. He later moved to the Yuma Special Olympics Cheer Team. ACHIEVE Human Services hired Charles as an overseer for the US Border Protection Agency. He passed away on March 22nd of this year.

Delpino said Charles’ family are grateful for the support of the Yuma community. “Yuma is the kind of place Charles can thrive, where you can be a good and honest person and be valued. There aren’t many such places in the world anymore. “

Cathy Reeves, who was Director of Special Olympics when Charles first participated in the field, praised Charles’ always positive attitude. “He has always taken up every challenge that was presented to him and he has always been kind and loving,” said Reeves. Swimming and cycling were challenging for Charles because of his motor skills. “But it never stopped him,” she said. “He always had this determination that, ‘I want to try; I will do it.’ And he found a way to get around it. “

“We’re excited to have a new public art feature in our community,” said Jay Simonton, acting city administrator. “This new work of art honors Charles and his love of cycling and Yuma. It also provided an opportunity for local students to create a work of art that will have a significant impact on our community. “
