Yuma of Transportation is still looking for bus drivers
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY-TV) School bus drivers are still in high demand throughout Yuma County.
And with more students going back to school, things could get worse.
New year, new semester, but unfortunately the same struggle for Yuma schools with too few bus drivers.
“You know how punctual our buses get to school and get students home, so having so few drivers has quite an impact on our students and the community,” said Ron Schepers, director of transportation.
COVID protocols mean fewer students on a bus at a time, extra trips and longer wait times.
“We do what’s called a double loading route, where we pick up one round of a group of students, take them to school, go back out and pick up another group on the same bus, which we don’t normally do,” Schepers said.
And with more students returning to in-person study this semester, things could get even worse.
“We’re seeing an increase in the number of students taking buses, which will mean that at some point we’ll add routes that we currently don’t have drivers for,” Schepers said.
That’s why Transportation Director Ron Schepers wants you to know that if you’re looking for a job, look no further.
“Driving a school bus is an amazing opportunity for people, and we want to support our communities and our students so they can go to school, get their education and get to the activities they need,” Schepers said.
Yuma Schools Transportation would like to fill up to 30 additional positions. You must be at least 21 years old to apply.
