YUMA, Arizona (KYMA, KECY) – The protests in Cuba continue and it gets very close to the Yumans with connections to the troubled country. Yuma locals are concerned for the people of Cuba as they grapple with shortages of food, medicines and COVID-19 vaccines.
Born in Cuban, Vivian Blevins says she is saddened by the events in her place of birth.
“I speak to the people in Yuma and to everyone in general. It is supposed to create awareness of what is happening in Cuba. What can happen there can happen here,” says the native Cuban Vivian Blevins.
Blevins left Cuba at the age of 10 but remembers the desperate conditions.
She and other locals of Cuban descent come together to speak about the urgent need for resources in the poor country.
“What happens is so important to me because my mother risked her life in a makeshift boat for freedom and that is exactly what the Cuban people are demanding right now, is freedom,” explains the daughter of a Cuban immigrant, Ashley Lopez.
While the country has had a hard time dealing with it for a long time, it has gotten worse lately.
“It’s the COVID. I think it’s the presidency. I think a lot of things are just happening in the world right now,” says Blevins.
Even though we are thousands of miles apart, Blevins and Lopez say something can be done.
“I just want to sensitize the people here. If you have social media, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, use your platform to raise awareness of this massacre in Cuba. The Cuban people need you and we have to be a voice.” to the voiceless, “explains Lopez.
Locals demand justice for their homeland.
“My grandmother sponsored us to the United States and it is an injustice to what is happening in Cuba.
Just be aware of what is going on and do your best to help people when you can, “says Blevins.
Protests are also taking place in Miami and Mexico. Blevins and Lopez hope that more Yumans will stand up for the Cuban people.
