Active monsoon pattern is expected to bring heavy rain and flooding across Arizona

A strong monsoon pattern is expected to affect much of the state at least until late Saturday night. District officials in central and northern Arizona advise people living beneath burn scars and other flood-prone areas to be prepared.

Almost the entire state of Arizona will be under some kind of flash flood watch or warning from Thursday, which, according to the National Weather Service, will last until at least 11 p.m. on Saturday. In Coconino County, officials strongly recommend signing up for emergency notifications at www.coconino.az.gov/ready. There is a sandbag station outside the County Health Building on King Street.

For those in the Museum Fire Flood Area who need help or information, Coconino County has set up a call center at 928-679-8525. Spanish language resources are available.

In Navajo County, emergency information can be obtained by calling 311 or by calling 928-333-3412. You can also find information at www.311info.net.

In Yavapai County, you can sign up for the Code RED emergency notification system at www.ycsoaz.gov.

You can find detailed flood information in real time on the websites of the individual counties and on the social media accounts. It is highly recommended that you follow official Twitter feeds and Facebook pages during a weather event of this forecast magnitude as the information is likely to spread quickly.

The danger of flash floods is particularly high in side canyons and washes. Emergency management officials urge hikers to stay away from these areas during this weather period. It might not rain where you are, but upriver might be a different story. Find a hill if you are in these areas and it starts to rain.

Residents in flood-prone areas are encouraged to have enough food, water, and supplies on-site for 3-5 days.
