The Arizona Department of Transportation is starting a project to rehabilitate a 10-mile stretch of Interstate 40 between I-17 and Walnut Canyon Road in Flagstaff. This project will improve safety and extend the life of the motorway.

Road works, road works, construction

The work includes replacing the existing pavement in both directions of I-40 and replacing the pavement on the entrances and exits at four intersections in the project area. The work also includes repairs to bridge decks along the 10 mile route and repairing the guardrail as needed.

During construction, parts of the roadway will be reduced to a single lane. Drivers should expect slower traffic and delays. In addition, drivers can expect night work with closings on and off the ramp while the ramps are being paved.

The project is expected to last two seasons and is expected to be completed in autumn 2022.

Since 2017, ADOT has replaced the lane on 29 mile I-40 west of Flagstaff and rebuilt 5 miles of the interstate in each direction west of Williams. ADOT has also rebuilt and re-paved 28 miles of I-17 north south of Flagstaff.

These projects repair the damage caused to the motorway over time by winter storms and heavy use by commercial vehicles.
