AZ Monsoons: Severe storms, hail possible in Tucson this week; NWS

TUCSON, AZ – Heavy storms are possible in the Tucson area Thursday through Sunday, with rainfall up to two inches, wind and hail of 50 mph, the National Weather Service said.

The storms that will begin over the White Mountains will move south-southwest towards Tucson each day, with Thursday and Friday being the best opportunities for torrential rain and wind in Tucson, the service said.

Storms will bring potential rainfall of an inch or more to the area, which could lead to flash floods after recent rains caused local washings to run from bank to bank.

Flowing washes could lead to dangerous road crossings and near built-up areas, the service said.

Storm activity will be limited on Tuesday and Wednesday before spreading further on Thursday and Friday.

From there, the chances of storms will diminish again on Saturday, although there is still a chance of rain every day, the service said.

The Old Pueblo currently has a 60 percent chance of rain on Thursday; before it is raised to 70 percent on Friday. From there, Tucson will have a 50 percent chance of rain on Saturday and a 30 percent chance of rain on Sunday, the service predicts.
