Chandler High School Assault Case Dropped: Juvenile Cleared After Water Cup Incident with Armed Phoenix Sergeant

A juvenile involved in a water cup incident with an armed Phoenix police sergeant at Chandler High School was cleared after assault charges were dropped, officials said Thursday. The case was dismissed following a review that found insufficient evidence to proceed, according to Chandler Unified School District and law enforcement sources.

According to officials with the Chandler Unified School District and Phoenix law enforcement, the juvenile’s assault case was dismissed after an internal and legal review found insufficient evidence to support the charges. The incident occurred earlier this year at Chandler High School when the juvenile allegedly threw a water cup at a Phoenix police sergeant who was on campus in a security capacity. School district spokesperson Lisa Garcia confirmed the dismissal Thursday, stating the district cooperated fully with law enforcement throughout the investigation.

“The review concluded that the evidence did not meet the legal threshold required to proceed with prosecution.”

Phoenix Police Department representatives declined to comment on specifics of the case but confirmed the sergeant involved was assigned to a school resource officer program that partners with several local schools, including Chandler High. The department’s public records show the sergeant has been with the force for over five years and was conducting routine duties on campus at the time of the incident. The juvenile, whose identity is protected under state juvenile privacy laws, was initially charged with assault after the sergeant reported being struck by the water cup.

Legal documents obtained by the news outlet indicate that following the initial charge, prosecutors conducted a thorough review of all evidence, including witness statements, video surveillance from the school, and the sergeant’s report. The review concluded that the evidence did not meet the legal threshold required to proceed with prosecution. Chandler Police Department officials, who assisted in the investigation, confirmed the case was forwarded to the Maricopa County Juvenile Court, where it was formally dismissed earlier this week.

School officials said the incident prompted a review of campus security protocols but emphasized that the presence of armed law enforcement officers on campus is intended to enhance student safety. “Our priority is maintaining a safe learning environment,” Garcia said. “We take all incidents seriously and work closely with law enforcement to address concerns promptly.” The Chandler Unified School District serves more than 45,000 students across 37 schools, according to district records.

The district has faced other legal and disciplinary challenges in recent years, including a separate sexual assault indictment involving a former Perry High School assistant football coach charged in late 2023 with offenses against a 16-year-old student during winter break. That case remains pending in Maricopa County Superior Court. Additionally, allegations against a drama teacher at Castile High School involving multiple students were reported last year, as well as a hazing incident at Hamilton High School where a student was charged as an adult.

Representatives from the Maricopa County Juvenile Court confirmed the dismissal but declined to provide further details due to confidentiality rules protecting juvenile proceedings. The juvenile’s attorney did not respond to requests for comment. The Chandler Unified School District and Phoenix Police Department continue to emphasize their commitment to student safety and the importance of due process in handling such incidents.
