Man fatally struck while jaywalking across South Alvernon Way near East 29th Street in Tucson

A 36-year-old man was fatally struck Tuesday afternoon while jaywalking across South Alvernon Way near East 29th Street in Tucson, officials said. Joe Frank Trujillo was hit by a southbound Dodge Grand Caravan about 90 feet north of a marked crosswalk, according to the Tucson Police Department.

The collision occurred around 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, 2026, when Joe Frank Trujillo attempted to cross the southbound lanes of South Alvernon Way just north of East 29th Street, according to the Tucson Police Department. Trujillo was struck approximately 90 feet north of a marked crosswalk, officials said. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene.

This incident marks the 14th pedestrian fatality in Tucson for 2026, according to official city statistics.

The vehicle involved was a southbound Dodge Grand Caravan, driven by a sole occupant. Police confirmed the driver was not impaired at the time of the crash, and no charges or citations have been reported. The Tucson Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances of the collision.

Following the crash, South Alvernon Way was closed at the intersection with East 29th Street in all directions, according to city traffic reports. The area is located on Tucson’s southeast side.

The City of Tucson issued a GovDelivery bulletin at 11:43 a.m. on April 8 confirming Trujillo’s death and that his family had been notified. No additional personal information about Trujillo has been released.

Year-to-date fatalities for all categories stand at 27, including 14 pedestrians, zero bicyclists, three motorcyclists, and 10 vehicle occupants. By comparison, the same period in 2025 recorded 17 total fatalities, including five pedestrians.

The Tucson Police Department’s media release titled “Fatal Pedestrian Collision – S. Alvernon and E. 29th St.” states the victim was jaywalking and not using a marked or implied crosswalk at the time of the incident. No further details on contributing factors or witnesses have been disclosed.
