Phoenix School District Receives First Electric School Bus in Arizona | Schools in the state of Arizona

PHOENIX (3TV / CBS 5) – It was a historic step in the fight against climate change and reducing CO2 emissions in the Valley. Cartwright Elementary School District received Blue Bird state’s first electric school bus earlier this month. The cutting of the ribbon was on Wednesday when city and school officials gathered to celebrate the momentous occasion. The district leader said this was a huge step forward in keeping the children and the planet healthy. “Owning an electric bus shows our children that we care about them. Not just today, how we train them and prepare them for a prosperous future, but also that we care about their health and the environment in which they can thrive, ”said Cartwright Primary School District Director LeeAnn Aguilar-Lawlor.

The emission-free rear engine school offers space for 84 passengers. The new bus also means lower fuel and maintenance costs as electric buses do not require an engine oil change or transmission service, officials said. The Governing Board helped to get the money for the new bus from the Diesel Emission Reduction Act. SRP helped provide a level 2 charging station at the school. “We believe these buses will become more common and we’re excited to have Cartwright take the lead,” said Mayor Kate Gallego.

It took years to get the bus, from proposing and handing over bonds to writing and approving federal grants. “It’s amazing. It’s an amazing experience and opportunity for our families, our young students, and for the future of Maryvale and the City of Phoenix, because if we can make it here in Cartwright, not only can it be in our city, but also. It can be spread across our state. ” but also the nation and the world, “said Aguilar-Lawlor.” We can have electric buses on our roads to improve our air quality so we can see really blue skies all the time, and that’s exciting. “
