How do you talk about money with your children, aging parents, or life partners? It can be difficult to know where to start and what topics to address. With us, discover some simple strategies and tools to help you start these important conversations in a fun and convenient way.
Sunday April 11th: Savings: A little can make a big difference
Did you know that even a very modest savings cushion can result in significant life improvements? Have you heard that it takes three months of living expenses to cover emergency expenses? Many financial education programs equate adequate emergency saving to this amount. While this guide may work for some people, it isn’t a realistic goal for many. Learn how and why a much smaller amount of savings (hint: in the low hundreds) can help keep your rent / mortgage protected and utilities on. Also, learn how much (little) you might need to save per paycheck to meet those workable goals. When you hit these recommended amounts, you are likely to be financially happier and less likely to need to resort to costly credit options such as pawn shops or payday loans.
Monday April 12th: Bank On It: Finding Safe and Affordable Bank Accounts
Caution when opening a bank account due to hidden fees and charges? Afraid that you will need every dollar you make and don’t want to be charged based on a minimum balance requirement? These are all legitimate concerns as many bank account terms and conditions have long, confusing fee language and high minimum balance requirements. You may have considered skipping a bank to avoid this confusion when managing your money. But did you know that families with no bank account are estimated to spend over $ 40,000 on financial fees in their lifetime? Join in and learn how to find accounts that eliminate the risk of overdrafts, low balance fees, and other high fees so you can manage your money to spend on what you choose. Learn how choosing a quality, safe, and affordable bank account can improve your life.
Tuesday April 13: Understanding the Fundamentals of Federal Student Loans
Challenge all borrowers, students, and parents to join us in learning how the Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA), a division of the U.S. Department of Education, can help you and how it has adapted to deal with the effects of Covid-19 19 on to consider borrowers. Get a basic overview of federal student loan programs and learn tips on how to use federal student programs to fund education beyond high school. The presentation covers how to create an FSA ID, as well as new and newly developed tools used by the FSA. It also reviews information on loan service providers, student personal loans, debt relief fraud prevention, credit monitoring, and default prevention.
Wednesday April 14th: Tax Fraud + Identity Theft
Scammers can try to take advantage of vulnerable taxpayers during the Covid-19 pandemic by stealing information and then funds. Learn with us how to spot signs that your identity has been stolen due to tax issues. Find out what to do if you are a victim of identity theft. Find out how the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) can help. Find out how to protect your records and learn about Covid-19 tax fraud and phishing systems.
Thursday April 15: Managing personal finances during Covid-19
Learn suggestions for managing your money in times of crisis. Topics covered include budgeting, emergency savings, and debt management. While some factors affecting financial security are beyond individual control, financial expertise can help all of us better manage our finances, especially during the sudden and drastic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Friday, April 16: Housing protection + resources
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will highlight resources that can help homeowners and renters during the national coronavirus emergency. The session helps consumers understand where to turn if they are having trouble making rental payments. Homeowners learn how federal law protects them from foreclosure and can temporarily suspend or reduce their mortgage payments if they experience financial problems.
Saturday April 17th: Tips for managing ups and downs
The Covid-19 pandemic has dealt a financial blow to many U.S. individuals and families. Attend this session to learn how to be your best with what is available to you. Learn budgeting tips and tricks to help you plan ahead and meet your monthly financial obligations. We focus on simple steps you can take to take control of your money even if it isn’t enough.
