In 1991 she moved to San Francisco, California, where she became a seamstress for a local auditorium when acts like Black Crows and KISS had to repair clothes.
“It just started snowing,” said Gallagher. “I was working with Rolling Stones back then, [Led Zepplin singer] Robert Plant carries my things for his introduction to [the 1995 Rock and Roll] Hall of Fame, he rocks with Neil Young and wears my shirt. “
Her client list grew to include Ringo Starr, Steven van Zandt of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, Shakira and Janelle Monáe more recently.
Founded in 1995, Wee Scotty has served a different purpose, offering classes to members of the San Francisco and now Flagstaff community, although some of Gallagher’s San Francisco students continue to attend through Zoom.
She and her husband Frank – a recording engineer in the music industry who was unemployed when the COVID-19 pandemic canceled virtually all tours – moved from San Francisco to Flagstaff in late 2020 to be closer to their brother. They already knew they would be enjoying life in Flagstaff after visiting the extended family for four decades, but sooner than expected they found the perfect place for Wee Scotty.
“I didn’t plan to start my company for at least four months. I thought I was taking a break. I’ve seen it [building] And the sun was shining on it and I thought, ‘Oh my god’. I got whiplash, ”said Gallagher. “And my brother Brian said, ‘Oh, I know Mary, let’s go over and I’ll make an appointment and we’ll talk to her.’ And we signed a lease that night. “
