Wildfire closes the route between Phoenix in eastern Arizona

GLOBE, Arizona (AP) – A route between the Phoenix Subway and the White Mountains in the highlands of eastern Arizona remained closed on Saturday due to wildfire along the freeway.

The Arizona Department of Transportation announced that a 97-kilometer stretch of US 60 between the eastern outskirts of Globe and the intersection with State Route 73 on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation has been closed.

Officials said the fire started about 5 kilometers northeast of Globe on Friday and burned an estimated 6 square kilometers of grass and brush early Saturday morning.

Tankers were assisting ground teams who worked to keep the fire out of ranches, mines and utility infrastructure, officials said.

No evacuations have been announced.

Officials said the fire was man-made but did not provide details.
